There are so many things to remember when setting up your construction sites , and health and safety signs are one of those things!

Health and safety signs warn others of danger and stop people from accidentally entering your site. They also tell people that need to enter your site what the rules are.

Basic construction site signs will tell people:

1. This is a construction site
2. No unauthorised access
3. Report to the site office
4. Wear PPE
5. Be aware of dangers

If you don't display signs at your site entrance, how do people know they are entering a construction site? Or what they need to do? It might seem obvious to you, but not to someone who has never visited the area before.

1. WARNING CONSTRUCTION WORK IN PROGRESS

Let people know where the construction site begins by displaying warning signs around the perimeter and at site entrances.

2. ALL VISITORS MUST REPORT TO THE SITE OFFICE

People entering your site must report to the site office. They need to sign in, and if they haven't been on the site before, have an induction.

3. NO UNAUTHORISED ACCESS

Construction sites are dangerous places. Only people authorised to be on the site, who have the correct training and experience, should be allowed. This sign tells anyone else that they must not enter.

4. SAFETY HELMETS MUST BE WORN

Most construction sites require hard hats to be worn. Overhead work, obstacles, and falling objects create hazards for your head. Safety helmets are replaceable - your head is not.

Oh, and don't forget to make sure your hard hats are in date!

5. HIGH VISIBILITY JACKETS MUST BE WORN

Every construction worker should wear high visibility clothing.

Construction sites are busy places. Mobile machinery, plant, and the movement of materials on sites make it essential that every worker can be spotted as soon as possible.

6. FOOT PROTECTION MUST BE WORN

Foot hazards are everywhere on construction sites. Uneven ground, sharp objects and nails, unfinished surfaces, dropping tools and materials.

Wearing safety footwear is your last line of defence, protecting you and your feet.

7. NO SMOKING ON SITE

Smoking isn't just bad for your health and the health of those around you. It can also increase fire risks. On a construction site, with flammable substances, materials that might not be fire protected yet, and waste, it's best not to take any chances.

Smoking should only be permitted outside in designated safe areas, or off-site.

8. DANGER CONSTRUCTION SITE PLANT AND MACHINERY IN OPERATION

Big plant and machinery operate on construction sites. And while your construction traffic management plan should keep people and vehicles separated, there will always be a risk to pedestrians and other vehicles.

Warn people about construction site vehicles at the entrance and on construction traffic routes or crossings.

9. CHILDREN MUST NOT PLAY ON THIS SITE

Construction sites are dangerous, but children might not realise it. A construction site might seem like an exciting place to play to a child. Make it clear that it isn't.

Don't just rely on signs to stop children and trespassers, also make sure that your construction site is secure .

10. SITE SAFETY STARTS HERE

Construction site dangers start as soon as you arrive on the site. Display this sign at the entrance as a gentle reminder to your team that the site rules apply the moment they enter the site.

Not after they sign in. Not after the break. Not after work starts. The moment they cross the entrance.
